#REDUSERHUSLEIA på SiO sine studentboliger!

 Den 11. november postet SiO en video på instagramkontoen sin (@siostudentliv) som skal gi tips til hvordan man kan “overleve på 50 kr i tre dager”. Tipsene vi fikk var blant annet å selge eiendelene våre, tigge etter mat fra venner og kreve tilbake penger vi har ‘lånt’ bort for årevis siden. Det hele var ment som et morsomt skråblikk, sier SiO. Kommentarfeltet under videoen sier noe helt annet. Mange hundre liker @min_drittleilighets kommentar #reduserhusleia, og mange skyter inn sine frustrasjoner om hvor lite SiO har gjort for studentene under korona. Dette viser i hvor liten grad SiO er i kontakt med studentenes behov og bekymringer. Vi vil ikke ha et SiO som bruker penger på videoer som håner studenter i krise. Vi vil ha et SiO som er handlekraftig og som tar studentenes krav og behov alvorlig. I steden for å gjøre narr av studentene, kan SiO sette inn konkrete tiltak slik at studenter i Oslo kan klare seg på studiestøtten, noe mange i kommentarfeltet under videoen til SiO poengterte. 

Videoen kunne heller ikke kommet på et mer passende/upassende tidspunkt. Samtidig som SiO poster dette, er det nemlig en ny runde med permitteringer som har store konsekvenser for folks liv og mulighet til å betale sine faste utgifter. Studenter får ingen støtte fra NAV når de blir permitterte, og SiO sitt mandat er å sikre studentvelferden i Oslo. På regjeringens hjemmesider står det at studentsamskipnader har til oppgave å ta seg av studentenes velferdsbehov ved de enkelte lærestedene. Da SiO ble opprettet i 1939 var det nettopp dette som var deres hovedoppgave. SiO sier selv på nettsidene sine at: “Der samskipnadenes samfunnsoppgave å sikre lik rett til utdanning og tilfredsstillende studentvelferd for landets studenteret ”. Det har ved flere tilfeller vist seg at SiO i dag opererer mer som en udemokratisk bedrift, heller enn en skipnad for studentene. For eksempel har SiO store overskudd hvert år, samt ledere og direktører som tjener mangfoldige ganger over gjennomsnittet. Det er tydelig at SiO ikke har klart å følge sitt eget mandat overfor studentene, og i tillegg er de frekke nok til å fleipe om deres egne inhabilitet til å fylle sin rolle.

Siden koronapandemien har SiO satt av 19,8  millioner for velferdstiltak for studentene. 6,8 millioner av dette er satt av til å utsette boligprisøkningen på 3% som skjer hvert år.  Dette er ikke godt nok.Studentboligene er viktige for velferden, og med 9000 studentboliger i Oslo har SiO blitt en av landets største boligutleiere. SiO sier selv at de setter av penger til å forebygge forverret mental helse blant studenter under krisa. Å redusere husleia er et viktig tiltak som vil sikre at studentene ikke trenger å bekymre seg for den høye leieprisen, og om de kommer til å klare å dekke den på slutten av måneden. Sikkerhet rundt bolig er essensielt for vår mentale helse. SiO har makt til å gjøre noe i denne situasjonen. Vi krever derfor at SiO senker husleia slik at studenter kan leve på studiestøtta si og slippe å være bekymret for om de kan dekke essensielle utgifter som bolig, medisiner og mat.

 I et boligmarked der det allerede er krevende å være leietaker, er studenter en gruppe som skal ivaretas av aktører som SiO. SiO skal ikke være en bedrift som profitterer på, og i tillegg latterliggjør, studentenes elendighet. SiO skal være en studentskipnad som svarer til studentene sine, og har vår velferd i fokus. Om SiO tar sin oppgave seriøst krever vi at de skal senke husleia, permanent, til et nivå som gjør det mulig for studenter å leve på studiestøtten. 

Krav: 

-Vi krever at SiO tar sin oppgave å sikre studentvelferden på alvor ved å redusere husleia.

-Vi krever innsyn i SiO's budsjett, og reell påvirkningskraft på SiO's pengebruk.

 On November 11th, SiO posted a video on their instagram account (@siostudentliv) about how students can survive for three days on 50 kr. The tips they gave to the students included selling our belongings, begging for food from our friends and demanding back money we had let people borrow years ago. After a storm of critique in the comment section, SiO claimed that the whole video was meant as a joke. People in the comment section pointed out SiO’s hypocrisy of joking about the difficult situation that students are in, when we worry about being able to make our essential payments at the end of the month. Hundreds of people liked @min_drittleilighet‘s comment “#reduserhusleia” (=reducetherent), and more still vented their frustrations with SiO and how little they have done for the students during the corona crisis. The video shows how out of touch SiO is with the needs and worries of the student base they are mandated to serve. We do not want a SiO that spends money on mocking students in crisis. We want a SiO that acts according to the needs of the students, and that takes our demands seriously. Instead of mocking the students, SiO can put in specific measures that makes it possible to survive on student aid money in Oslo, something that was suggested by many in the comment section. 

The video could not have come at a more unfitting moment. At the same time as SiO’s post, a new hoard of people are being laid off from their jobs, with great impact on people’s everyday life and their possibility to pay their bills. Students do not get any compensation from NAV when they are laid off, and SiO’s mandate is supposed to protect students and secure their welfare. The government's webpage states that the task of SiO, and their counterparts in other locations, is to take care of the students' welfare at the specific institutions they serve. When SiO was founded in 1939, this was their mandate. On their webpages SiO claims that: “It is the student welfare organisations societal responsibility to assure equal rights to education and satisfactory student welfare for the students in the country.” However, it has been shown time and time again that SiO is being run more like an undemocratic business, rather than being run for the students welfare. This shows in their large profit margins, as well as in their very high-paying top positions. It is clear that SiO is failing the students and their own mandate, and they even have the nerve to joke about their inability to uphold their own promises.

Since the pandemic started, SiO has reserved 19,8 million kroner to secure student welfare during the pandemic. The only measure related to housing is the 6,8 million they are planning to use to postpone the annual rent increase. This is not good enough. Affordable student housing is important for welfare among students. SiO owns more than 9000 student apartments in Oslo, and has become one of the largest landlords in Norway. SiO themselves claim that they want to focus on  measures to prevent worsening mental health among students during the pandemic. Reducing rent is an important measure that will ensure that students do not have to worry about the high rent prices, and if they are able to make their payment at the end of the month. Secure housing is essential to mental health. SiO has power to do something in this situation. We therefore demand that SiO reduces the housing rent to a level that makes it possible to live off student aid, and not have to worry about being able to cover essential payments like housing, medication and food.

In a housing market where it is already challenging to be a renter, students are a group that SiO can and should take care of. SiO should not be profiting off students, at the same time as they mock our worries and needs that are not being met by them. SiO is supposed to answer to the students and have our welfare in focus. If SiO takes their task and mandate seriously, we demand that they permanently reduce rent to a level that makes it possible to live off student aid.

Demand:

-We demand that SiO takes their mandate seriously by reducing housing rent. 

-We demand to have access to SiO's budget, and to have influence on SiO's spending.
